Athena SWAN is a Charter which recognises excellence in an institution's commitment to gender equality. Originally a charter which focused on the progression of women academics and researchers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM), the Athena SWAN charter was extended in 2015 to address gender more widely.
The charter includes gender equality work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students and not just barriers to progression that affect women. The charter also recognises that individuals have identities shaped by several different factors and encourages the consideration of the intersection of gender and other factors wherever possible.
What is happening at QMUL
Queen Mary became a signatory to the Athena SWAN charter in 2005 and obtained its first Bronze award in 2008.
The university received a Silver award from the Athena SWAN charter in April 2017.
The School of Politics and International Relations successfully attained a bronze award for the Gender Equality Mark, which has now become part of the wider Athena SWAN charter. With the expansion of Athena SWAN to the Arts, Humanities, Social Science and Business and Law (AHSSBL), the Diversity and Inclusion Team will be rolling out a programme of support to engage these departments in submitting for awards under the charter.
The university is proud that all STEMM departments hold either a Bronze or Silver Athena SWAN award to demonstrate their commitment to gender equality.
As part of sharing good practice, these applications are listed below.
