Disclosure & Barring Service

Certain roles within Queen Mary will require a screening from the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) if, for example, they involve working with children or adults.

It is important that these roles are identified at the earliest possible opportunity in order that a DBS check can be carried out. Normally this should be identified at recruitment stage but there may be cases where a job role changes and necessitates a DBS check.

DBS Flowchart

We have produced a flowchart to help departments/schools/institutes identify who requires a DBS check

Information for Applicants

Helpful information regarding the DBS process can be found on the Government DBS pages.

DBS Update Service?

What is the update service?

For an annual subscription of £13.00 per year you can have your DBS certificate kept up to date and take it with you from role to role, within the same workforce, where the same type and level of check is required. Subscribing to the new service could save time and money depending upon how many DBS checks you have needed in the past.

How to access the update service

Any individual with a DBS certificate issued on or after 17th June 2013 will be eligible to join the update service. The process involves subscribing online at the Government DBS pages. You must enter your DBS certificate number, your name, date of birth and address and pay the subscription fee using the secure payment facility. As soon as the subscription is confirmed you will then be able to access the benefits of the new service.

Benefits to applicants

  • Saves time and money
  • One DBS certificate is all you may ever need
  • Take your DBS certificate from role to role within the same workforce
  • You are in control of your DBS certificate
  • Get ahead of the rest and apply for jobs DBS pre-checked

What else do you need to know?

To coincide with the launch of the update service, the DBS will no longer automatically issue a copy of your DBS certificate to us. You will therefore need to provide us with the original of your completed DBS certificate once you receive it to enable us to verify the contents.

The DBS has produced an Applicant's Guide to the update service.
